John Woodland

Australia

Born in Sydney in 1944, I was educated in The Rocks area where I grew to appreciate the
significance of the inner city buildings, the streetscapes and Sydney Harbour. I became
interested in the local architecture and the everchanging scene on the harbour and the
wharves. I have also frequently expressed in my work the hardships and difficulties of life
that people were forced to endure in past years. Regarding maritime events I have
illustrated the treacherous attempts of salvage at sea and the living conditions aboard sailing
vessels. In other subjects I have tried to portray life in industrial situations and home-life in
depressed times.
I have painted exclusively in watercolour for over fifty years and I truly believe that it is the
most beautiful expression of all mediums. Painting in watercolour is always challenging and
it can often be difficult and frustrating to express, however the rewards are always worth the
experience.
In 2010 I was elected a Fellow of the Royal Art Society of New South Wales and in the
same year I was invited to become a Member of the Australian Watercolour Institute. I am
also a Founding Member and an elected Fellow of the Australian Society of Marine Artists
and a Professional Member of the International Society of Marine Artists.
I have been exhibiting for many years and have received numerous awards including wins at
the Sydney Royal Easter Art Show, Mission to Seafarers Victoria Traditional Art Award,
Royal Canberra Art Award, Bright Watercolour Art Award, Singleton Art Award, Popular
Choice Award at both the ACTA Shipping National Maritime Art Award and Mission to
Seafarers ANL National Maritime Art Exhibitions.
In conclusion, in all my time as a watercolourist, I have never lost the enthusiasm and appeal
that this beautiful expression of art offers to an artist.
