The delight of the wily wash in all its translucent, luminescent glory, guided across or allowed to flood a beautiful paper, made itself known to me when living in Rome in 1976. To begin with it was a medium for note-taking, jogging the visual memory of that wonderful city; later for larger, considered compositions. I was elected to the Royal Watercolour Society in 1989. Then I exhibited pictures successfully at the Royal Academy Summer Shows and in one-person shows at London galleries.. Pictures were often of interiors (rooms and contents) and still lives. ''Old gowns hanging in shadowy rooms'', somebody wrote. Views in London came later. Later still, Sussex landscapes. Early loves: Cotman, Girtin, Bonnington.
