Igor Tishin
Belgium
Igor Tishin (born in 1958, in Vasilpolye of Gomel Oblast, Belarus): a resident of Brussels, Belgium, since 2000; a modern artist who has enjoyed recognition both in Belarus, where he is considered as one of the most influential artists of today, and Europe.
Igor Tishin, now a European artist, is to Belarus a “grandfather of guerrilla movement,” one of the major representatives of “unofficial” art. A graduate of Minsk School of Arts (1978) and the Academy of Sciences (Minsk, 1983), Tishin passed through the Social Realism school and later was influenced by modernists and the French avant-garde. In the late 1990’s, he received a scholarship in Switzerland and went on to delve deeper into real art.
Igor Tishin’s works, which go beyond common aesthetic standards, combine techniques of conceptual art, abstraction, Surrealism and Dada, Expressionism, punk, and elements of comic-strip art. In them, you will find quotes, artistic and literary, Bacon and Kharms, newspaper clippings and academic painting, cinema and photography, irony and absurd. The artist himself does not venture a clear-cut definition for his style, naming Chaïm Soutine and Francis Bacon as his teachers.
Igor Tishin and his wife, Natalya Zaloznaya, are residents of Brussels, Belgium, since 2000. A participant in the 2005 Venice Biennale, Tishin has of late been exhibited mainly in Europe, but in 2010, his personal exhibition was also staged in Minsk. Igor Tishin’s works are in the collections at the National Art Museum of Belarus, the Museum of Contemporary Art (both in Minsk, Belarus), and the Museum of Contemporary Russian Art (New Jersey, the US).
