Rick Bardsley-Smith

Australia

Born & lives in Sydney, Australia. Studied town planning & architecture. Worked in this field for 40 years. Often involved in illustrating/rendering throughout working life. Developed a love of watercolour painting. Retired in 2018.

“I find we walk past many buildings, walls, facades, and places that are rich with design, texture, patterns & 'story'. They go unnoticed and often they are all grubby. Add sunlight, resulting shadows and it all gets very interesting. Jump across to wider natural landscapes, especially in Australia, its anything but tidy. I celebrate these experiences as I find them.

“Rosa Delicata 1” was inspired by a visit to Notre-Dame. Staggering to think that a Rose Window of this size can grace the building with such a delicate and intricate form. I wanted to capture that. Not the pretty colours on the inside but that which is exposed to the weather & the grime, that defines its form, that holds it together.

I was also struck by the form and shape of the deciduous tree obstructing my view of the window. For me, the tree and the window resonated. One organic and one man made but both seeking to define and support their existence with delicate strength.”
