I’ve long been entranced by the beauty of watercolor. Its translucency and ability to capture light is unsurpassed. The glow of the pigment, suspended in water, moving across the paper yields constant surprises and effects. I strive to use watercolor’s unique properties to convey the myriad qualities of light.

Watercolor is also well-suited for my impressionistic style of painting. I primarily work wet-into-wet, allowing the pigment to flow and intermingle, which is particularly effective in creating a variety of edges, linkages between shapes, and suggestions of the landscape. I have found watercolor to be singularly effective in suggesting a subject, leaving much to the viewer’s imagination.

Yet light and technique go only so far without intention and a narrative. While I enjoy painting almost anything, my best paintings tell a story, convey meaning, and capture the imagination of the viewer.
