Birgitta Glode

Denmark

My watercolurs depict often landscapes in an abstract or half abstract way.
layers of soft tones are mixed with graphic lines, marks and granulating pigments in front.
The expression has a poetic, nordic and moody tones. Sometimes strong.
And the colur blue is almost always present in some form.

I want to express memories of the feeling, that certain landscapes and motives inspires me to feel. Not an exact copy of a certain motive, but the feeling, for instance respect, curiosity, love, uncertainty or longing. A landscape I want to remenber and come back to. I also want the finished painting to surprise me, and to make me wonder how and why it turned out the way it did. I like to think that the painting "had a will of its own".

To get there I found that the watercolour technique is the best way to express this. I use large amounts of water and watercolour in different solutions. Strong or week. I poor this onto 300g, 425 g or 600g high quality paper, almost using the law of gravity instead of brushes: allowing the flood of colour to cover a marked space. Surplus colour is allowed to to run onto the table to be sucked up with a paper towel or cloth. I´m specially fond of high quality granulating watercolours. Before or after I like to make marks and print with different kind of thin nonabsorbent paper. My aproach to my work is intuitive. I prepare myselv with loose thumbnail sketches and an idea of what colours to use. But I often change plans along the way allowing the watercolurs "to lead the way".It´s like a dialogue. And I´ve learned that this approach gives me the best results. The unpredictability is the most fascinating about the watercolour technique for me.
Sometimes it´s like developing af photo, that you couldn´t rember you had taken, or discovering a memory of a place you´ve never bin to.
