Alexandra Walsh

Sweden

I am an artist exploring nature as an entity that obscures and distorts reality. The landscape paintings I make are therefore somewhere between the figurative and the abstract, between reality and dreams. I place great importance in the craftsmanship and the properties of the material - I approach watercolour materials as a scientist would. This standpoint has allowed for my unique insight into the behaviour and properties of watercolour. In turn, my insights have given me the possibility to find innovative ways of painting and manipulating watercolours. I identify myself primarily with two contemporary art movements; tachism and magical realism. I further draw great inspiration from the Japanese ukiyo-e and sumi-e traditions.
