Since there is no advancement in art since the beginning of it, the only reality available to an artist is his/hers inner world. Today, for an artist, consists of the past and the future as well (for creative artist a special nostalgia for the future). The way of an artist is an unspeakable form. Therefore, I can only speak about myself.
Since I can remember the process of painting for me was always the same. First, I get an image in my mind of a complete work in every detail, stroke, color. Then comes execution which more often than not lasts as long as it takes to cover the white paper with paint. So that simple and fast. What is not so simple and fast of course is the process of preparation to get to that professional level of execution of ideas and their development (more often, ideas develop after the initial painting is done. The result is series of painting). I paint what I like to see, just like composer writes music he or she likes to hear. Color is my main tool, I draw, create forms, metaphors and rhythms from it. One, two or many colors, doesn’t make a difference as long as I can dive in it.
Working in different media (oil, watercolor, installation, video...) and mingling with other artists is very important element for development of my craft. After fairly large number of solo exhibitions, I think I can say there is no substitute for that kind of experience as well.
As for my art in the future, I guess I’ll keep the principles from the past – not confusing what I am doing with what somebody else is doing or did, not following trends or trying to flirt with the audience but being aware of connections of what I do with what is happening in the world and about the needs of the audience etc...
Honesty is most valued element in life and art of the past, future and today. Being honest artist for me means – if you don’t like your work, change it until you do. Not easy for most of us but it the road to professionalism and something called true art.
