In this painting, my intention was to capture a particular feeling — a quiet awe that settles in the chest — rather than to record the castle itself. Roccascalegna Castle became the vessel for that emotion: the sense of standing before something ancient and weathered, yet still alive in its landscape.
From the low viewpoint, the castle feels both strong and vulnerable, held in place as the sky moves fluidly around it. That interplay of solidity and shifting atmosphere suggested a kind of timeless endurance, as if the scene had absorbed centuries of wind, storms, footsteps, and stories. Warm light catching the stone carries a sense of memory, while cool shadows and drifting haze bring breath and distance, letting the air slide along the cliffs.
The lost edges, soft transitions, and the weaving of warm and cool tones were all ways of shaping that emotional impression — the movement, depth, and living atmosphere of the moment. Rather than fixing the scene in time, I wanted it to feel as though it were breathing.
Through these tonal relationships, the painting reflects the sensation the place evokes, allowing the emotion to guide the image more than the literal subject.
