Jeannie McGuire
United States
Jeannie McGuire (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1954) is a contemporary American painter noted for her representations of figures, created with loose and expressive brushstrokes that illuminate glimpses into human character. In her work, eyes are a central focus as is body language, represented in moments of thought or action.
She studied at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in a commercial graphic design program as well as photography. During a decade or more of working in the graphic design field for both corporate and freelance clients she simultaneously pursed fine art with her primary focus on the figure. However, computers drove the future of commercial art, so she decided in 1990 to dedicate herself exclusively to drawing and painting. Since then, her work has evolved into a style that combines technical precision with an intuitive approach to painting.
Her creative process is sparked from the various expressions and gestures of the people in her reference material. She paints what she feels and finds inspiration through her own imagined stories, real-life situations, and often from her reflections of literature and film.
McGuire’s figurative artworks are now in private collections in the USA and Europe including the Pennsylvania State Museum. Her work has been widely shown and exhibited in various venues, watercolor societies, art associations, American Watercolor Society, Jordan Schnitzer Art museum Oregon, the Grand Palace Paris, among others. She has been the recipient of awards. Most noted the American Watercolor Society’s Gold Medal of Honor 2011. Her work has been featured in print articles and podcasts such as Watercolor Artist, American Art Collector, Le grand livre de l’aquarelle, Artensity, Learn to Paint podcast. She has been sought out to instruct figurative art workshops and individual mentoring.
McGuire currently works and lives in her hometown of Pittsburgh, traveling often to the San Francisco bay area. She continues to develop her figurative paintings within multiple series: women, men, dance and industry.
