Ruijun Hu
United Kingdom
Ruijun was born and raised in the Gansu province of China, where he studied fine art and stayed on as a teacher at the Northwest Normal University, Lanzhou.
Since 1991 he has been based in London, working predominantly in oils and watercolour whilst continuing his pursuit of other creative passions such as Chinese calligraphy and music. Growing up in the east and living in the west for the last few decades has shaped a multicultural background. This in combination of his wider interests in other mediums has enabled the cross-fertilisation of ideas that has helped him to move forward with his work.
In 2008, he was selected as one of the core artists for the Armada Project, where six large paintings depicting the Spanish Armada were recreated based on the records of the lost Armada Tapestries. This project was commissioned by the House of Lords where they are now permanently displayed.
Since 2020 and throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, he has been teaching online classes for watercolour and Chinese calligraphy, promoting the joys of the creative arts as a key instrument to alleviating the difficulties that people are facing in these challenging times.
