Portraiture sits at the centre of my watercolour practice. I am strongly influenced through my training in psychology where I am taught to observe human emotion and behaviour. I am drawn to the quiet psychological spaces that exist beneath outward appearance and to centre on the core of the emotion. My paintings explore moments of stillness, resilience, and introspection, where a gaze or gesture becomes a doorway into a deeper narrative.
Watercolour is the perfect medium to translate emotion through its subtle shifts that I endeavour to balance with elements of control with intuition. Rather than striving for perfect likeness, I seek presence — an emotional honesty that appears through subtle shifts of light, edge, and atmosphere. The fluid nature of the medium mirrors the complexity of human experience, allowing vulnerability and strength to coexist within the work.
Each portrait becomes a threshold — inviting the viewer beyond representation and into an intimate encounter into the world of the portrait.
