Ana Victoria Margallo

Philippines

Painting makes me see things in a different light. Streets, churches, window panes, turn into gradient washes and dry brush texture in my head. I have lived a life of fast-paced yet controlled decision-making to walk the path to a decent life. It is with painting that I managed to slow down, breathe, and take in the beauty of my surroundings. It is with painting that I learn to let go and let the uncertain flow of water take control.

However, I also like to challenge the notion of fluidity of watercolor by painting the hardness of limestone and adobe of old architecture which truly fascinate me. I believe symmetry and beautiful aging is what makes old architecture truly a sight to behold and those are what I intend to capture in my works. It is bridging decades and centuries of history and culture with the present. Apart from structures, I intend to bring into light the beauty and culture of more than 7,000 islands of the Philippine archipelago.
